The beaches of California are full of beautiful fit people. Much of our perception of the ideal physique come from images of bikini clad women and muscled hunks hanging out on the LA Beaches. Many of our top fitness brands have their roots on the sand of California – LA Fitness, Gold’s Gym, Bay Watch – yes, it inspired people to lose weight and get fit!
The Two Muscle Beaches
California has been famous for its fitness culture since the 1930s when Muscle Beach was created on the Santa Monica beach immediately south of the Santa Monica Pier. Popular gymnastic displays were routinely held there on city-provided equipment, and it became a popular weekend attraction for day trippers. The beach was closed for a while during the 1960’s and 1970’s, due to economic and social problems.
In 1989, the City of Santa Monica officially moved Muscle Beach and today it serves gymnasts, acrobats and youth with an extensive gymnastics training area. Meanwhile, the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department has continued the primary barbell, weightlifting and bodybuilding activities and events of the original Muscle Beach at the Venice “weight pen” (an enclosed area dedicated to strength training). There is also an area for gymnastics, rope climbing, and acrobatics.
In 1987, the City of Los Angeles officially dedicated “Muscle Beach Venice” with the added word of ‘Venice’ in the title to distinguish it from the original “Muscle Beach” in Santa Monica.
There are regular bodybuilding competitions held on Muscle Beach, which attract the top bodybuilders from all over the USA. Recently Arnold Schwarzenegger appeared to present an award to Joe Weider at the Labor Day competition on Muscle Beach. In fact, Arnold is still sometimes seen riding his bicycle along the beach front – although this is becoming a rarer occurrence.
Gold’s Gym Comes to California
It was in 1965 that Joe Gold opened a modest fitness center in Venice Beach, California, named Gold’s Gym. This has grown to be a multinational fitness brand. Named “the Mecca of Bodybuilding”, it was frequented by Arnold Schwarzenegger and featured in the 1977 film Pumping Iron.
Venice Beach Surfers
Venice Beach is also a popular destination for surfers, who always look exceptionally fit and toned. We shall be looking further into surfers workouts soon.
Bay Watch – Workouts and Inspiration
We cannot really talk about Californian beaches and beautiful people without referring to Bay Watch. The television series ran for 11 years, from 1989 to 1999. It included celebrities including David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Alexandra Paul, Traci Bingham, Erika Eleniak, and Carmen Electra. In the film Borat, the main character views the cast of Bay Watch, especially Pamela Anderson, as being the ultimate in perfectly sculpted, beautiful bodies.
As part of the new California Fitness and Diet Plan, we shall take all the best aspects of what California has to offer, to create our ultimate body workout!
